Will genAI have a negative impact on document processing SDK usage in the future?

Asking all devs out there: will AI have a negative or positive effect on document processing SDK usage (like PDFTron or Nutrient) when it comes to more complex use cases, specifically in document processing? What are the biggest risks?

When it comes to document processing SDK usage like PDFTron or Nutrient:

- It’s a curious mix. AI can both benefit and challenge the status quo of document processing SDK usage. Here's how:

- Acceleration vs. Automation: The magic of genAI lies in accelerating tasks like extracting data from text, making document classification and summarization a breeze. But remember, the SDKs are evolving too. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Will AI render some SDK functions redundant?
- Which specific SDK features remain irreplaceable?

- Customization and Control: AI can reduce the need for certain manual tasks, but it might not give you the customization and control SDKs do. So, for complex use cases where precision is vital:
- AI can't always handle the intricate details like custom workflows or highly specialized tasks, where SDKs like PDFTron or Nutrient might still be your best bet.

- The SDKs Adapt: The big players in SDK land are already integrating AI, enhancing their platforms to work in harmony with these tools. Here's the outcome:

- Integration becomes key.
- SDKs will evolve to include AI capabilities. This means AI could enhance SDK functionalities without necessarily replacing them.

So, let's discuss the pros and cons together:

- Risks:
- Over-reliance on AI might lead to neglecting essential SDK features, resulting in possible gaps in functionality or precision for specific tasks.

For the developers out there, what do you think? Shall we explore how AI can streamline but not entirely replace SDKs? How can we ensure the marriage of AI and SDKs benefits everyone? Share your thoughts, and let’s find the best path forward together! 😊

I’m not sure - just curious if you have any thoughts on what types of use cases AI will be able to handle in the future that SDKs can already do now - which would reduce developer reliance on these SDKs
Do you develop these kind of tools, or want to build a new AI one if I may ask? :)

@Ant, about PDFTron use cases / features, will AI be able to handle these in the future? If so which of them

When it comes to PDFTron features, AI is already starting to handle some of them, but there's a gradient to how far this trend might go:

- Data Extraction: AI is getting better at extracting text, images, and information from PDFs, potentially making features like table recognition and data extraction less reliant on SDKs.

- Document Classification and Categorization: With advances in machine learning, AI can classify documents, reducing the need for custom SDK scripts.

- Summarization: AI can provide summaries, an area where SDKs traditionally might not have specialized features.

- Custom Workflows: Here, AI might not match SDK precision. Features like PDF annotation, form filling, and custom workflows that demand intricate control might remain SDK territory.

- Security and Digital Signatures: These complex areas involve legal and security standards AI is not yet equipped to handle comprehensively.

The future? It looks like AI might make some SDK features obsolete or evolve them. But for nuanced tasks, SDKs will stay relevant, perhaps integrating AI to offer an enhanced experience.

Let's brainstorm together – how can SDKs evolve to work in harmony with AI, and what exciting new possibilities might arise from this union? "Finding the AI needle in the SDK haystack isn't just about luck, it's about smart integration". 😄

Yes I am a developer - trying to develop a new AI one but trying to see other developers’ thoughts on how feasible it is to replace these tools with open source + AI tools

Cool. Ive used chatdoc for pdf files, not the same but you could use an external pdf reader, then build everything else. An idea... Heard Gemini is good with pdfs also.

I see - are you a developer for a company or do you work on side projects with open source? Since I thought it is hard to rely 100% on open source when it's something that requires strict security protocols right?
Too much work go open source 100% as of now. At least for me. But nothing is impossible

I work for a small company, so security is not that big of a problem. Time and cost is. Time is very expensive too...
